Yordan Alvarez’s father, Jesus Vargas, is back home in Cuba, where baseball has been playing without interruption since the 1930s. This season, the Astros rookie and his younger brother, Cristian Vargas, will face the Red Sox in the World Series. Jesus Vargas was in the stands at Minute Maid Park on October 2, cheering for the local team and his son, as he always has.
And if that weren’t enough, Vargas had plenty of help from his son. Alvarez started playing organized baseball just a few months after he turned seven and became the youngest player in the Astros minor league system. And he soon found himself playing in the Texas League, the same league where he has spent most of his life. Alvarez’s dad, a former major leaguer in the Phillies organization, has always been with him.
“My father and I talk every day,” Alvarez said, “and he has always just told me to never give up and that I was going to be a starter in the major leagues one day. He always says that, and he has always said that I’m his son, he’s my father, and that I’m going to be a great player.”
“He has always been one of the most positive people I’ve ever talked to,” Alvarez said.
Yordan Alvarez in the Astrodome in 2007:
“I grew up in the Houston area and my father was a big baseball fan and he always tells me when we play, ‘I want to see you throw me the ball.’ That’s always been his goal. To me, my dad is just a great guy, and he’s always just tried to help me out.”
“When you’re young and you have family like he has, it’s awesome to have family around you.
