Serena Williams hails Tiger Woods’ influence as she continues her US Open run
The 26-year-old American is currently ranked No 1 in the world – but also said she would like to see a player like Woods rise up the rankings
“I was definitely scared when I came to the United States, but then I realized that he is a really good player and then I learned he’s a really good person”.
It will be an “overarching theme” for Williams, who is competing for a second Wimbledon title. Williams, who plays in Melbourne on Sunday and in London the following week, said it’s been a very emotional experience so far. This year’s Australian Open, however, could offer Serena, 29, a glimpse of her US Open heroics.
“You can’t go wrong with him”, Williams said.
Woods has never won an Australian Open championship. “I have to thank her for it”, he said. In fact, he could be about to turn that “overachiever” into a contender in his own right. Woods had to beat Williams a second time in an epic match to win at Melbourne Park in 2014, but the American has also seen his ranking rise by 16 spots this year. “I’ve tried as much as I can to not get too focused on it”.
It’s been a tremendous season for her, with a Grand Slam championship in Melbourne and an Australian Open title in Melbourne, to keep the streak going. Williams’ streak of winning Australian Open titles stretches back to 2012.
Woods, on the other hand, started his season a year older, when he had already won the US Open. We’ll see what happens this year, but it’s not too soon to start planning for the year ahead.
Williams is a nine-time Grand Slam champion, and was the women’s champion at the Australian Open and Wimbledon championships. “I’ve never been able to beat him”. She has won three Grand Slam titles, including winning Wimbledon the last two years. “I think he should be in the top 50”.
