Curling chair resigns in wake of soccer abuse investigation

A St. Clair-Superior curling chair has resigned in the wake of Ontario’s hockey abuse investigation, and an Ottawa high school wants to take on the role as the curling ambassador.

The chair of the St. Clair-Superior Curling Club resigned on Sunday when the province’s Commissioner of the Human Rights Commission said she had evidence of abuse on the curling club.

The organization is not under investigation, but was under investigation after a Globe and Mail report in June highlighted abuse complaints involving curling.

The Human Rights Commission’s investigation is not the first to be announced in response to the newspaper’s report, as the ministry said it would investigate any complaint “to the extent possible.”

“We made the decision to take the matter to the Human Rights Commission because we felt it was imperative that the club be investigated so we could provide any necessary assistance,” said John Macleod, a Ministry of Education and Early Childhood Development spokesperson.

The investigation of St. Clair-Superior, also known as The Curling Club at The Curling Club, will be led by a panel of outside experts.

The first step of the panel will be to take information from the organization and interview the two curlers involved in the abuse and those around them.

In addition to interviewing the club, the panel will review the evidence and the reports the Ministry of Education and Early Childhood Development received from the Globe and Mail and the StarPhoenix and make whatever recommendations they feel fit the facts.

The club also faces a potential fine of up to $11,500.

In addition to suspending curlers from the club, the club will be asked to provide copies of any documents relating to the abuse and provide an apology to those who filed complaints or had their concerns addressed.

The commission will also be asking the club to provide copies of any documents relating to the abuse and to apologize to anyone who had their complaints
