Phil Spector killed her. The press tarred her. Her mother wants to ‘set the story straight’ by revealing the truth about her son. But can she handle it?
Cheryl Platten: Spector’s first album, with the title You Want It Darker, was released just a year before Spector’s father drowned in a boating accident. It was released with the lyrics “I’m getting the darker” after his father’s death. His mother says that she has only heard the title in lyrics and has no idea why the song title was chosen. She says she had no idea about the song.
Cheryl Platten: Spector was not around at the time of his father’s death. He was away on tour with his band. He doesn’t know the circumstances of his mother’s death. But he heard about it in the newspaper the day after it happened.
Phil Spector: I was with a great group of people with this big band. I was trying to get to Japan so I could play with this really great group of Japanese musicians, and I lost my father. And I told my wife that I loved her and she broke up with me the next day. And I told her: “You know, I think I love you.” And she said: “Oh, that’s terrible.” And I said: “Well, now I know why.” And she asked me: “Why do you love me?” And I said: “You’re smart. You know what you’re doing. And you have a great sense of humor. And you’re very beautiful.” She said: “It’s funny. I don’t know how I can get along without you.”
Platten: His mother says that she doesn’t know how she can get along without him. He doesn’t return her phone calls. And that’s what really hurts her.
Spector: I don’t think it’s a bad thing to love somebody badly. If they don’t work out, there’s nothing wrong with that. If they are really good to you, there’s nothing wrong with that
