MEXICO CITY — The state security chief and two other Mexican soldiers died Thursday when their helicopter crashed in the Sierra Madre mountain range of Mexico’s Tabasco state, an official said.

The Federal Preventive Police Special Forces (FPPSF) Special Forces unit was en route to the Mexican capital with a mission to rescue a team of Mexican soldiers, the state’s governor said.

The state’s attorney general said two of the victims were members of the unit. He gave no details on how or where the helicopter was shot down or where it took off.

The official said the wreckage was located about 180 kilometers (110 miles) northwest of the capital.
