Gore announces fossil fuel emissions inventory at UN summit
It could be the most comprehensive study of climate change’s long-term effects to date, and could be controversial.
Gore announced a new report on climate in the US in a speech to the UN Climate Change Summit on Friday, where the environment secretary warned that failure to reduce greenhouse gas emissions dramatically would be “catastrophic” for the planet.
The draft report was released at the UN Climate Change Summit, held in New York City. During the speech she said: “We are seeing a sea change in the public’s view of climate change, with the public now seeing it as a reality, as something with serious implications for all of us.”
“We are at a tipping point, with the climate crisis escalating and worsening before our very eyes.”
Gore is also due to deliver two major speeches on Friday, on what she described as humanity’s need to address global warming, and what could be done to save the planet from the worst effects of climate change.
In a press conference on Thursday, Obama said he had been “extremely concerned” with some of her proposals, saying they could “set the tone for a whole generation of public policy”. He is expected to address climate change in an address to the climate change summit on Friday.

A former aide to Al Gore, Anne Hagedorn, said: “This is the first time Al has ever set out a comprehensive proposal that takes a system-wide approach to how the US should deal with climate change, and I think that’s something that is very exciting.”
